David Wilkinson

Chartered Financial Planner, FPFS, TEP

I have worked in financial services since 2002 and joined St. James's Place in 2013. I am a Chartered Financial Planner, Fellow of the Personal Finance Society (FPFS) and Trust & Estate Practitioner (TEP).

I personally advise a deliberately limited number of private clients and families, helping them organise and grow their wealth through long-term financial planning. My clients include business owners, entrepreneurs and senior professionals, with particular experience advising partners in the legal and accountancy professions.

Based in Edinburgh, I combine a highly personal, long-term advisory relationship with the investment resources, specialist expertise and infrastructure available through St. James's Place.

About

My approach starts with understanding a client’s wider financial life rather than simply managing an investment portfolio. I work with clients and their families over many years, often across generations, helping them make informed decisions as their circumstances, careers and family priorities evolve.

My work commonly includes investment and pension planning, detailed cash-flow modelling, retirement and financial-independence planning, trusts and estate planning, intergenerational wealth planning, gifting strategies and the tax-efficient withdrawal of capital. I also regularly help clients through more complex events such as bereavement, business sales, partnership transitions and the restructuring of family wealth.

A significant proportion of the clients I advise are partners and senior professionals within leading legal, accountancy and other professional-services firms. I understand the particular issues that can arise from variable remuneration, partnership structures, capital requirements, significant pension and investment assets and the need to coordinate personal financial planning with wider tax and legal advice.

Where specialist legal, tax or accountancy advice is required, I work closely with a client’s existing professional advisers or introduce suitable specialists. My role is often to act as the central financial planner, helping ensure the different elements of a client’s affairs work together coherently.

I believe clients with substantial and complex financial affairs benefit from continuity. Rather than passing relationships between different relationship managers, I remain personally responsible for the families I advise, supported by my longstanding team and the wider resources of St. James's Place.

New relationships will typically involve £2 million or more of investable family wealth, although I will occasionally work with clients below this level where their circumstances, future wealth or wider family relationship make us a particularly good fit.

I also regularly deliver client briefings and seminars on financial-planning and tax-related developments, and I maintain my professional knowledge through ongoing study and involvement with organisations including the Personal Finance Society (PFS) and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).

Prestigious industry status recognises the value I place on my development and gives clients the confidence that they are supported by one of the UK’s leading wealth professionals.
