Specialist Advice For Police – a helping hand with your financial goals

Welcome to Police Matters – our dedicated hub for helping police officers understand their financial and retirement options available and how to ensure they are on the right track with their money matters.

We already work very closely with members of ASPS, CPOSA, NPCC and PSA.

David McColl, of John Scott Davidson Limited, is a specialist in police matters, supporting officer and retired officers across the UK with the following:

  • Pension and retirement planning – understanding your pension options and the changes to Police Pension rules.
  • Taxation – what is the effect of Lifetime Allowance and Annual Allowance on your pension
  • Implications of opting out of the pension scheme
  • Investment Strategy and Portfolio Management
  • Financial planning for the future including estate planning and Wills and financial protection against risk.

We help police officers in full and current service, those nearing retirement and those who have already retired. For those who have already retired, you can find our post retirement services here.

The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time. The value of any tax relief is generally dependent on individual circumstances.

*Will writing involves the referral to a service that is separate and distinct to those offered by St. James's Place. Wills are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Where are we now?

We are all living longer, meaning police officers and other public sector workers spend longer in retirement so their pensions are having to be paid out over a longer period of time.

In 2010, the coalition Government reviewed the public service pensions with a view to ensuring that they remain sustainable over a longer term. This has meant that for all public service schemes under which a member’s benefits would no longer be based on their final salary but would instead be based on their Career Average Revalued Earnings (CARE), with a retirement age that would normally be linked to State Pension Age.
